Meeting With Students

I've learned to schedule specific appointments...the hard way! LOL

Student Presentation Topics

If this hadn't happened to one of my good friends the first semester she taught, I wouldn't believe it. But this is an actual recreation of the incident in a collegiate freshman computer literacy class!

Lateness

Coming in late to class is very disruptive and always annoying to instructors. But there is always one student in every class who just doesn't get it!

Always Ask for Clarification

There Are No Easy Solutions...

Budget cuts are threatening education quality across the country. And there are no easy solutions. Yet the students can always see a bright spot...LOL

It All Evens Out...

OK, I admit it. I was captain of my high school chess team! LOL

Cheaters Never Prosper

Can't count the number of times this has happened in my MS Office classes!

Choose Your Analogies Carefully

I often find myself needing to update my analogies based on the age of my students. References to Mr. Clean and the Stay Puft Marshmallow man somehow don't work today!

Sex Education

Yes, this is an actual conversation from my junior year in high school. My "clever" friend was needling the gym teacher who also taught our health (sex ed) classes. Fortunately, the instructor had a great sense of humor!

Three Rs Replaced!

Textbooks

I never have students buy a book unless we are using it during the semester. But I recall this happening a few times when I was in college!

Hidden Agenda

We've all fallen into a few of these early in our careers.

Ask The Right People

Perhaps waiting a few years might be a good idea...

Thinking Great Thoughts

If Leibniz and Newton had co-workers, we might not have calculus now!

Technology Rocks!

Every good systems developer knows you should choose the software first, then the hardware. Alas, not all college administrators realize this.

Doing More With Less

Budget cuts are hitting every state-funded college. But how do you avoid capping enrollment? Its a tough issue to handle without increasing class size.

Listen Up Next Time

Yes, this really happened in a freshman computer literacy class I was teaching.

Home Schooling - Lesson Learned

We're called education professionals for a reason!

Completion Rates - Mystery Solved

We all know that many colleges want to focus on increasing completion rates. Most students I have are very serious students and the reason it takes them so long to complete a degree is that they are attending part-time while juggling family responsibilities and a job. I'm always willing to go out of my way to help students catch up if they start late or fall behind. Of course, occasionally I get a student like this who just fails to communicate with me:

Thought I'd Heard It All...

...until a history professor shared this one with me at a conference!

Be Flexible

I always try to be flexible on deadlines, especially with community college students as most are juggling jobs and family issues. But there is always one instructor like this in the department...

Writing Assignments - A double-edged sword
